Virtual machines can seem juuuuust a bit too geeky for most otherwise computer-friendly people. That's sad, because it's an easy, free way to try or use a separate OS without messing with your hard drive.

From memory you can use vmwares converter and virtualbox will read vmdk's

for linux if you want the easy solution, boot a live cd

dd if=/dev/sda1 of=/path/to/images/sda1.img bs=1024

do that for every partition mounted in /etc/fstab of your machine then setup those images in virtualbox

This tutorial shows how you can virtualize a physical Linux machine. It is intended not only for virtualization, but for any relocation of a RedHat Linux based system from one machine to another.

The real dd command

The basic command is structured as follows:

dd if=<source> of=<target> bs=<byte size>(usually some power of 2, not less than 512 bytes(ie, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096, 8192, 16384, but can be any number.) skip= seek= conv=<conversion>.

Source is the data being read. Target is where the data gets written. If you mess up, and accidentally reverse the source and target, you can wipe out a lot of data.

BasicLinux is designed specifically for old PCs. It uses a small kernel and busybox to provide a low-RAM Linux, capable of browsing the web, doing email, and functioning as an X terminal. The current release of BasicLinux is particularly suitable for old laptops — it has PCMCIA capability and includes MagicPoint (a presentation tool similar to PowerPoint).

The current release of BasicLinux is 3.50. It comes in two versions: one boots from a DOS harddrive, the other boots from floppies. Both versions have the option to install themselves to a Linux partition on the harddrive.

I used this tool to fix a problem with an apparently nameless pst file in outlook 2003. Run the tool then use the delte function to remove "unnamed" entry in the "store provider" section.

At the 2009 Photo Marketing Association (PMA) Convention held in Las Vegas early last month, the rumours were already swirling that Canon would soon be unveiling something new and "exciting" in the Digital SLR arena.

A few weeks later on March 25th Canon confirmed the speculation and introduced the Canon Rebel T1i digital SLR camera (also known as the Canon Rebel EOS 500D in some countries).

The 15.1 MP Canon Rebel T1i shares an almost identical CMOS sensor with the higher end Canon EOS 50D. The Canon Rebel T1i also inherits the large 3.0-inch, high resolution 920,000 dot LCD monitor with a wide viewing angle and the 12800 high ISO capability from the EOS 50D.

Hey people! I've made a major update to this article. If you are having trouble, you can always try the steps outlined in my original post.

One of the cooler hacks that I've found for the Wii is how to store and load your games from a USB Hard Drive . The idea is that you plug a hard drive into one of the USB slots on the back of the Wii , and rip/store your games. When you want to play them, you have only to access the hard drive and select what you'd like to play.

Like it or not, with Linux comes advocacy. There are a lot of people out there who like to spread the love in whatever ways they can. One nice side effect of this is the abundance of free Linux related information available to anyone. That’s good for us, as we’ll be covering just how to find all this great material.

Certainly not all Linux books are free (just ask Tim O’Reilly) but the nature of Linux means that the “spirit of freeness” tends to surround more than just the operating system. Some of the websites listed below offer full length dead-tree versions of the same books, the purchasing of which could be a great way to support these organizations.
